Ralph Fiennes in Conclave

In the mood for an award-winning thriller? | Conclave

Edward Berger’s Conclave is one of 2024’s most acclaimed films. Winner of four BAFTAs, including Best Film and an Academy Award® for Peter Straughan for Best Adapted Screenplay, the film is a suspenseful, nail-biting tale about power and pageantry. After the sudden death of a sitting pope, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) must steer the College of Cardinals through an ancient and secretive process to select the right man to lead the world’s billion Catholics. With a supporting cast that includes John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, “Berger’s twisty film takes the audience behind the notoriously secretive closed doors of the Catholic Church for one of its most private processes,” writes The AV Club.

Piece By Piece

In the mood for a wildly imaginative musical doc? | Piece By Piece

For Piece By Piece, Oscar®-winning documentarian Neville Morgan—who has crafted such films as Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain—didn’t blink an eye when Pharell Williams suggested using LEGO animation to tell his life story. “It became such a metaphor for everything that was going on in the film,” Neville says in the production notes. The resulting collaboration is a magical mystery tour that follows Pharrell from growing up in Virginia Beach to emerging as a musical superstar to finding the importance of being happy. We Got This Covered writes, “Piece By Piece constructs a vibrant, beating heart as transcendentally trailblazing as Pharrell Williams himself.”

Jude Hill in Belfast

In the mood for a moving family drama? | Belfast

Kenneth Branagh won an Academy Award® for his original screenplay for Belfast, his autobiographical tale of growing up in Northern Ireland during the start of the Troubles. Nine-year-old Buddy (Jude Hill) finds his family thrown into turmoil as his parents (Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan) struggle with whether they should leave their home to avoid potential political violence. Playing with his friends and hanging out with his beloved grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds), Buddy dimly sees how his world is changing in terrifying ways. Branagh told Vanity Fair, “I was really the beneficiary of an enormous act of sacrifice on the part of my parents to leave something that defined them—that city, that extended family.” Yet even in such conflict, the film, writes Time Out, “radiates sincerity and warmth.”

Sara Klimoska and Anamaria Marinca in You Won't Be Alone

In the mood for a sublime horror film? | You Won’t Be Alone

According to The Guardian, Goran Stolevski’s You Won’t Be Alone pushes the limits of its genre by exploring the idea of “what it means to be human.” After kidnapping a baby, the witch, Old Maid Maria (Anamaria Marinca), raises the child in complete isolation. Now an adult, Nevena (Sara Klimoska) tries to understand a strange new world outside her cave by taking over the bodies of strangers to see and feel as they do. Shapeshifting into a new mother (Noomi Rapace), a young man (Carloto Cotta), a child, and even a dog, Nevena captures the wonder and horror of existence. The film, according to The New York Times, “moves so hypnotically between dream and nightmare, horror and fairy tale that, once bound by its spell, you won’t want to be freed.”

Taylor Takahashi and Taylour Paige in Boogie

In the mood for a coming-of-age story for a new generation? | Boogie

In Boogie, Eddie Huang borrows from his own experience as a child of immigrants to create a modern coming-of-age story. Alfred “Boogie” Chin (Taylor Takahashi) is a high school student caught between two worlds—the traditional family of his Taiwanese parents and the multicultural community of his hometown, Queens, New York. Boogie, who dreams of playing for the NBA, must decide which world he wants to live in. Huang tells The New York Times how as a kid he faced similar questions: “My parents do things this way, my culture does things this way, but what choices would I make?” Huang captures, with refreshing clarity, Boogie’s world. “Boogie is genuine while weaving Black, Hispanic, Asian, and white teenage New Yorkers together with effortless ease,” The Wrap writes.
