From stylish spy caper to an action-filled epic to a moving coming-of-age story, Peacock has great movies in June to kick the summer off right.

Michael Fassbender in Black Bag
In the mood for a sophisticated spy thriller? | Black Bag
Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is a spy film that mixes style and suspense in lethal proportions. When George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a counterintelligence agent for Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), suspects a mole might be selling information about a new cyber weapon, he weaves a cunning plot to trap the traitor. The only problem is that in addition to snaring the four most likely culprits—played by Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, and Tom Burke—his wife, Kathryn (Cate Blanchett), is also a suspect. Caught between his wedding vows and patriotic oath, George sets out to save both country and home. The Independent writes, “While the supporting cast are impeccable across the board, it’s really Blanchett and Fassbender’s film to command, with performances that drip with old-school star power.”

Adepero Oduye in Pariah
In the mood for a coming-of-age classic? | Pariah
In writer-director Dee Rees’ debut feature, Pariah, Alike (Adepero Oduye), a 17-year-old African American poet living in Brooklyn, struggles to bring her complex reality into harmony. Between falling in love for the first time, writing poetry, and hiding her sexual identity from her family, the young teen is trying to figure out who she is. “For Alike, it’s not so much coming out as it is coming in to,” Rees told The Film Stage. “She knows that she loves women. That’s not the question. But her question is how to be in the world.” For IndieWire, the film’s beauty lies in the tangible way Rees’ story “relates the pangs of first love, the desirous ache of adolescent sexuality and the excitement of not just discovering yourself but finding those kindred spirits with whom you can share your life.”

Jude Hill in Belfast
In the mood for a moving family drama? | Belfast
Kenneth Branagh won an Academy Award® for his original screenplay for Belfast, his autobiographical tale of growing up in Northern Ireland during the start of the Troubles. Nine-year-old Buddy (Jude Hill) finds his family thrown into turmoil as his parents (Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan) struggle with whether they should leave their home to avoid potential political violence. Playing with his friends and hanging out with his beloved grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds), Buddy dimly sees how his world is changing in terrifying ways. Branagh told Vanity Fair, “I was really the beneficiary of an enormous act of sacrifice on the part of my parents to leave something that defined them—that city, that extended family.” Yet even in such conflict, the film, writes Time Out, “radiates sincerity and warmth.”

Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton in Lisa Frankenstein
In the mood for a hilarious horror spoof? | Lisa Frankenstein
Directed by Zelda Williams from a script by Academy Award®-winner Diablo Cody, Lisa Frankenstein brings back the fun of ‘80s horror comedies. “I wanted this movie to be funny, but I also wanted it to feel like it was funny in a less modern way,” Williams says in the production notes. Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) is an awkward teen who finds real connection when she awakens a 19th-century corpse (Cole Sprouse). Pressured by her peers and parents to be more normal, Lisa instead follows her heart by falling for her recently dead beau. The film “is performed by a very game cast who all understand the assignment and deliver what is likely to be one of the funniest films of the year,” writes the AV Club.

Alexander Skarsgård in The Northman
In the mood for a powerful historical epic? | The Northman
In The Northman, Robert Eggers unfurls a ferocious epic about betrayal, revenge, and redemption in the Viking world. After witnessing his world fall apart as a young prince, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) swears he will avenge his father (Ethan Hawke) and save his mother (Nicole Kidman), a vow that leads him from his homeland to war-torn kingdoms and eventually into the mythic world of Norse Gods. The cast, which includes Willem Dafoe, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Björk, help recreate a meticulously researched period where, as the Independent writes, “History comes thundering back to life.” With jaw-dropping action scenes and stunning landscapes, The Northman is, writes Empire, “A cinematic saga worthy of the ancestors.”
